Keela says that their Keela Women’s Talus Jacket is designed for year-round use, as an emergency and an active layer. It uses 60gsm Primaloft Gold in the body, which isn’t quite as warm as 100/80gsm in the Rab Xenair Alpine. Nevertheless, it is still a very effective insulation.

The fleece side panels add breathability, help give a bit of freedom of movement and have a smooth face to prevent pilling. 

I really like the wired brim on the helmet-compatible hood: it definitely means business, providing good protection from the elements. The hood is adjustable, with two elastic drawcords, but they would be better if they could be tucked away so they don’t smack the wearer in the face on windy days. 

The zipped handwarmer pockets have a fleece lining. The cuffs are elasticated and pull on easily over gloves. Snug fit, even though the Talus is also quite bulky.

Use this as an emergency layer or belay jacket, I’d recommend sizing up to ensure there’s enough room underneath.

I didn’t get the chance to test the Keela Women’s Talus Jacket in really cold conditions. However, I think it will come into its own as an active, all-day layer for walking in very cold, dry winter weather.
