TODAY’S TOP 5

Sight fishing for walleyes is a thing. ????

Growing up (and living in MN) I can’t imagine being able target pre-spawn and spawning walleyes on natural lakes…but the times I’ve tried to imagine it, this Instagram reel from Dustin Wolf is exactly what I pictured in my head LOL. ???? Sight fishing for walleyes!

Un-freaking-believable!

Dustin was out fishing with his buddy Jon Lehman (aka MinnDak Outdoors on YouTube) when that magic happened – they were hitting up some little ND gem as the ice was coming off.

Looks like they were throwing a Kalin’s Tickle Tail Swim Bait and caught a bunch of nice ‘eaters’ with some quality bites up to 26”+ mixed in.

Jon just posted a longer YouTube video from the outing which you can hit up below:

Btw I saw several comments under the videos saying “they are defending their nests,” which isn’t true. Walleyes are “broadcast spawners.” They do not make nests and they do not protect their eggs.

BUT guess who does….

Did you know that zander make nests?!

I’ve mentioned this before, but way too fascinating not to bring up again.

Here’s another difference between walleye and their muscle-bound cousin: Zander make/protect nests whereas walleyes just sprinkle their eggs across bottom. Imagine fishing a minefield like this:

Don’t ever attempt to grab a handful of eggs from a Zander’s nest…. It didn’t turn out well for the last folks who tried:

Sorry, I had to! ????

Bunch of interesting walleye-spawn factoids.

From this Max Loesche write-up on his Strike and Catch site:

Walleye will spawn in water temps above 40 and up to 50°F.

As soon as the water temperature is nearing 40°F, which is usually just after the ice has disappeared in the northern regions of the North American continent, the fish will gather in big schools and start their migration toward their spawning grounds.

Spawning activity will commence at a water temperature of about 44-46°F and peak at around 50°F.

Walleye either spawn in smaller lake or river tributaries or shallow lake areas with depths of 1′ to 10′.

If they spawn directly in a lake, the shallows they tend to seek out are usually close to the shoreline and exposed to winds, as the moving water will cleanse the area from fine sediment that could harm the eggs.

…windswept shallows will hold more oxygen, which is needed for the eggs to survive.

The preferred bottom features for spawning walleye include rock and gravel, as the eggs will have an easier time attaching themselves to such bottom structures.

Furthermore, the shallow areas the walleye will use for spawning in lakes will almost always be closely located to considerably deeper water.

The smaller males arrive at the spawning ground much earlier than the bigger females, who prefer to remain in the deeper water adjacent to the shallows.

Walleye are broadcast spawners, which means that they will scatter their eggs across the bottom instead of building protective nests for them.

That is why they choose bottom features such as gravel or rocks so that the eggs can attach themselves to the structure or fall into crevices, where they will remain protected until they hatch.

On average, a female produces a staggering 27K eggs per pound. Egg production generally ranges from 12-55K eggs per pound. Amazingly, that means that a trophy-sized walleye of 10+ lbs has the capacity to produce and store over 500K eggs in her body.

Most of them have reported an additional weight of about 10-25% in pre-spawn fish, compared to egg-free post-spawn ones. …bigger females with more eggs will be closer to that 25% mark, while smaller fish will be closer to a 10% weight increase….

This would imply that a 5-lb walleye could gain roughly 0.5 lbs before the spawn. A 10-lb fish could gain 1 to 1.5 lbs, and a 15-lber could gain close to 4 lbs before it spawns.

And more info yet here, unless you’re ready to tap.

Insane back-country walleye bite!

Would you follow a scrappy, fur-hat wearing Canadian (you just met) deeeeep into “the busch” with no cell service? ???????? We did, and it was worth the risk LOL.

Sure, Bakers Narrows Lodge in Manitoba is known for their world-class lake trout…but they also have some incredible back-country lakes to explore for walleyes. What an adventure!

Scuba diver saves a tangled-up walleye. ????

If you somehow haven’t heard of Ed the Diver yet, he scuba dives in popular WI fishing spots (Fox River, Menominee River, etc) and strikes gold scooping up snagged baits lol. He also picks up trash and overall leaves the water better than 1,000 of us combined ever could – which is equally as amazing.

On a recent dive in the Menominee River at Marinette, WI he brought home 80-ish baits that he snatched off of snags on the river bottom. Wild enough he also came across a walleye that was tangled-up in fishing line and snagged in the hooks – had it stuck like a dog on a leash – but Ed made an awesome release:

???? Keep doing your thing, man!

6. I had no idea perch spawn looked like this…

From a FB post by Jim Leffel in his 1/4-acre WI pond:

7. Quality read on spring river walleye.

8. New science shows that releasing big fish…

…is crucial to maintaining healthy populations:

As fish age, they’re putting less energy into growth and more energy into reproduction and the quality of those reproductive events. A 12-lb female is producing far more eggs than three, 4-lb females. What it means is that as big females get older, their contribution of quality eggs is exponential in the population.

9. NY: Queenston launch reno should be done this month.

On the Niagara River.

10. New Windstar cruise ships have FFS.

TIP OF THE DAY

Have you tried the “Dodd knot” before?

Thx to TW reader John Minnihan for the heads-up, as that was the first time I had ever seen this variation of joiner knot for tying leader line to a braided main line. Folks are saying that it’s even sleeker and tighter than the FG knot, and of course easier to tie than it…everything is lol.

Little update from the guy who originally created that knot:

“When I first developed this knot the braided lines were more oval shaped so it took many more wraps to prevent any slippage, which is the death nail to a good knot. Most new braided lines are now woven with 8 strands, making them rounder, which eliminates about half the wraps….”

Says he never needs to use more than 7 wraps now when using newer, rounder braid.

Remember: Practice makes perfect. ????????‍♂️

I still have nightmares about the first time I tried tying an FG knot up. Might be the only thing I’ve ever completely given up on after attempting it for a mere 47 seconds. ????

MEME OF THE DAY

Friendly reminder as the temps start to rise…. ????????

TODAY’S EYE CANDY
