Surf fishing is more than just a method of catching fish—it’s an immersive experience that connects anglers to the elements. Feeling the waves, watching the sunrise, and observing the wildlife all contribute to the unique appeal of targeting striped bass from shore. It’s also one of the most accessible and thrilling ways to fish. Unlike boat fishing, which requires significant investment, surf fishing only demands a rod, reel, and a spot at the edge of the water.
We mined the surfcasting knowledge and experience of Nantucket-based surfcasting guide Tammy King and On The Water’s surfcasting specialist Jimmy Fee for their thoughts and opinions on what makes surfcasting for striped bass so special. Beyond the excitement of the catch, responsible handling and conservation efforts are crucial to sustaining striped bass populations. Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) biologist Ben Gahagan emphasizes the importance of reducing post-release mortality, as recreational anglers account for a significant percentage of striped bass deaths each year. By using single hooks instead of trebles, minimizing fight and handling time, and ensuring fish are kept wet and released properly, anglers can make a tangible impact on the species’ future. Simple modifications to tackle and an awareness of best practices can greatly increase survival rates, allowing the fish to continue their journey.
With striped bass populations facing challenges, surf anglers play a key role in conservation. As more fishermen recognize the importance of sustainable practices, they are adapting their techniques to prioritize the health of the fishery. The collective effort to handle and release fish responsibly can help ensure that future generations will continue to experience the thrill of surf fishing for stripers. Whether a seasoned angler or someone just starting out, making small changes in approach and gear can have a lasting impact—preserving the opportunity to chase these incredible fish for years to come.
This video is part of a three-video series we filmed with DMF, highlighting striper fishing tactics and techniques in three different scenarios: boat fishing, shore fishing, and kayak fishing.
Enjoy!
