In Week 5 of our 14-week Striper Migration Report series, OTW’s Assistant Editor, Matt Haeffner, checks in with Captain Brian Williams of Badfish Charters in Ocean City, NJ and Peter Jenkins, owner of The Saltwater Edge in Middletown, RI. Brian and Matt discuss where to begin the search for those larger migratory bass, how to target stripers on silversides and cinder worms, and the importance in being observative and stealthy while hunting for backwater stripers. Then, Peter and Matt run through the spring forage base of Rhode Island stripers, how to approach the cinder worm “hatch” and, looking ahead, knowing when to call it quits in the estuaries and salt ponds to find bigger bass in bigger water.
This week, spawned-out Chesapeake stripers in the 40-inch class hit South Jersey’s beaches, Long Island’s south shore enjoyed a big wave of over-slot fish while 20- to 30-inchers kept pushing through Long Island Sound toward Rhode Island, and schoolies filed into the Cape Cod Canal with bunker and herring in tow.
