In late August, the crew of Maridee Charters out of Narragansett, Rhode Island, along with repeat client Karl Mohr, set a new state record for mahi-mahi while trolling a green Sterling Tackle Lumos tracker bar.
Whether or not the fish would become a record, it was destined for the table. The Maridee crew got a gaff into the large dolphin and upon landing it, realized they might have the new state record. When they weighed it on board, their scale bounced between 33 and 34 pounds; however, upon weighing and measuring it at Snug Harbor Marina, where there’s a certified scale, the official weight read 37.56 pounds with a length measuring 59 inches.
Like many state record catches, this one is a game of inches. The previous state record was held for almost 30 years since 1995 with a 58-inch mahi that weighed approximately 5 pounds less than the Maridee’s catch at just 32.5 pounds.
Assuming the catch is verified by Rhode Island DEM, it will appear on their list of Freshwater and Saltwater Sportfishing Records.
