Shortfin Mako Shark — Shijun L., grade 7, Pike School, Andover, MA

Art and marine science merge in a program sponsored by the Massachusetts Marine Educators (MME) and Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. An annual marine art contest challenges students in grades K-12 to explore marine biodiversity in the sanctuary, located at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay.  This year’s deadline is May 10.

The contest encourages students to learn about the wide array of species in their ocean backyard, and through understanding be better prepared to make informed decisions about local ocean issues. The contest offers five divisions — high school (grades 9-12), middle school (grades 5-8), elementary school (grades K-4), scientific illustration (all grades), and computer graphics (all grades) with the theme: “Exploring Biodiversity in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.”

Wolffish — M.J. W,. grade 11, Falmouth HS, Falmouth MA

Prizes include cash awards, museum passes, and certificates. Other sponsoring organizations include the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and several MME member institutions. Entry is free (limit of two pieces of art per student); for rules and an entry form, see the contest brochure.

A list of sanctuary species can be found here. Artwork can depict a single species, several animals in their habitat, predator-prey relationships, or animals under threat. A signed registration form must accompany each entry. Students from states other than Massachusetts are invited to participate.
