NextImg:Legendary Fishing on Lake Champlain

To say that Lake Champlain has a lot to offer anglers is an understatement nearly as large as the lake itself. Lake Champlain is immense, and across its 400 square miles of water that hold over 90 species of fish, the fishing opportunities are endless. While all that water might seem overwhelming, Lake Champlain is quite approachable, thanks to its welcoming harbors, convenient boat and kayak launches, and picturesque bays and backwaters. What’s the first step to fishing Lake Champlain? It’s deciding which angle you want to take on this bountiful fishery.

Let’s break it down.

The most sought-after species in Lake Champlain are largemouth and smallmouth bass. There’s a reason that dozens of bass tournaments are held on Lake Champlain, including the 2024 Bassmaster Elite tournament August 8-11 in Plattsburgh. Lake Champlain has a reputation for producing big numbers and some of the largest bass in the Northeast. With a diverse range of habitats including shoreline and offshore structure, anglers can target them with a variety of tactics.

In addition to bass, Lake Champlain is home to an array of other popular sportfish, including northern pike, walleye, yellow perch, and panfish such as bluegill and crappie. The lake’s diverse ecosystem supports healthy populations of these species, making it an ideal destination for anglers interested in targeting a wide range of species on one outing. Weedy bays, submerged structure, and shallow flats with access to deep water attract a wide range of prey and predators.  Lake Champlain also has a strong fishery for some traditionally overlooked species, like common carp and the prehistoric bowfin, and a resurgent musky fishery.

For those seeking a challenging angling experience, Lake Champlain’s open waters offer opportunities for pursuing coldwater species like lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon. These cold-water species require specialized tactics and equipment, whether it’s deepwater jigging and downrigger trolling for lakers or trolling for landlocked Atlantic salmon with lead-core lines.

Kayak fishing on Lake Champlain allows anglers to access secluded fishing spots and navigate shallow areas that may be inaccessible to larger boats. And with today’s modern fishing kayaks, anglers aren’t limited to backwaters. On calm days and early mornings, ambitious kayak anglers can use fishfinders to deep-jig for lakers and pedal-powered kayaks to troll for salmon.

Beyond its abundant fishing opportunities, Lake Champlain also provides a picturesque backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. Surrounded by rolling hills, verdant forests, and quaint lakeside communities, the lake offers a tranquil escape from city and suburban life.

Kayak anglers can immerse themselves in the quiet, breathtaking beauty of Lake Champlain. Paddling along the lake’s pristine shores, exploring hidden coves, and taking in panoramic views of the Adirondack and Green Mountains make for memorable outdoor experiences.

Whether casting a line from the shore, launching a boat from one of the lake’s many marinas, or exploring its secluded coves and bays, anglers are sure to find endless enjoyment on the pristine waters of Lake Champlain. With its rich diversity of fish species and stunning natural beauty, Lake Champlain remains a cherished destination for anglers seeking adventure and relaxation alike.
