China Lake is a 3,939-acre lake in Kennebec County, Maine. Located northeast of the state capital of Augusta and with a maximum depth of 85 feet, it offers some of the best bass fishing in Maine and hosts several bass tournaments each year.
Timing: July
Technique: Offshore Jigging
“China Lake has a healthy population of giant largemouth bass, and one of the best ways to find them is on offshore rock piles in the summer. I look for specific rocks that have fresh fish moving in and setting up in 12 to 16 feet of water, as well as areas in 20 to 30 feet. It is also important to look for grass. I find that a ¾-ounce football jig keeps me connected to the bottom, where I know the fish are seeing it. Slower is better, especially in Maine. A longer, 7-foot, 6-inch rod like the Duckett Fishing Black Ice is important for making long casts and delivering good hooksets on deep-water fish.”
