AllOutdoor Review – Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L Backpack

   10.09.23

The history of Mystery Ranch backpacks is a fascinating journey that spans several decades and is deeply rooted in the world of outdoor adventure and military gear. Founded by Dana Gleason and Renee Sippel-Baker, Mystery Ranch has evolved from its humble beginnings in Bozeman, Montana, into a globally recognized brand known for its exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and unwavering commitment to producing top-quality backpacks. With a rich heritage that blends Dana Gleason’s earlier ventures, such as Dana Designs and Kletterwerks, Mystery Ranch has become a trusted name in the world of backpacks, catering to a diverse range of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers and hunters to firefighters and military personnel. The pack that I will be reviewing today is the Sphinx 60L Hiking Backpack.

Mystery Ranch Coverage on AllOutdoor

The Sphinx 60L was tested over the course of several years as a hiking pack and has been utilized in such places as the Austrian Alps, and throughout New England. The Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L was purchased by myself and Mystery Ranch has not been allowed to preview this review prior to publication.

The world of backpacking and outdoor adventure has seen an influx of gear choices in recent years, each promising to be the ultimate companion for trekkers, backpackers, and adventurers. Among the endless amount of options available, the Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L stands out as a unique contender. With its reputation for durability, innovative design, and a company history steeped in outdoor adventure, Mystery Ranch has crafted a backpack that piques the interest of serious backpackers and hikers. In this review,  I we will delve deep into the features, performance, comfort, and overall suitability of the Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L backpack to determine whether it lives up to the hype and justifies its price tag.

The Sphinx 60L boasts a design that exudes quality and attention to detail. Mystery Ranch has a history of producing backpacks that are rugged and built to last, and the Sphinx 60L is no exception. Constructed from 210D nylon, 330D Robic fabrics, this pack not only feels robust but also will stand up to the rigors of an unketp trail. The fabric is water-resistant, which provides a layer of protection against light rain and splashes. However, it’s important to note that the pack is not fully waterproof, so using a rain cover or dry bags for your essentials is still advisable in heavy rain conditions.

One of the standout features of the Sphinx 60L is its three-zip design, which is a unique take on the traditional top-loading backpack. This design allows for easy access to the main compartment from the top, side, and bottom. It’s a game-changer when it comes to packing and accessing your gear. The U-shaped front zipper provides quick access to items in the middle of your pack without having to unpack everything, this is a real convenience on the trail.

Opened Up

The Sphinx 60l also incorporates a robust and adjustable yoke system, ensuring that the backpack can be customized to fit a wide range of body types. This level of adjustability is a crucial aspect of comfort, as it allows users to fine-tune the fit for maximum load distribution and reduced strain on the shoulders and hips. The Yoke systems from Mystery Ranch are usually the best part of their packs and this is no exception.

Yoke

In terms of capacity, the Sphinx 60L is a 60-liter backpack, which is a sweet spot for multi-day trips. It provides ample space for all your gear without being overly bulky. The pack also features multiple external attachment points, including compression straps, gear loops, and daisy chains, making it versatile enough to accommodate additional equipment such as trekking poles, ice axes, or sleeping pads. I also really like the two large vertical torpedo-style front pockets on the front of the pack. These pockets are great for holding longer items or things you might want quick access to like rain jackets and extra layers.

Torpedo Pockets

The Sphinx 60L comes with a hydration reservoir pocket, a feature that is increasingly expected in modern backpacks. This pocket can accommodate reservoirs of various sizes, ensuring you stay well-hydrated on the trail. It also includes a convenient zippered pocket on the hip belt for quick access to essentials like snacks, a compass, or a GPS device. The water bottle pockets are also very generous in size and can be used to help secure the bottom of a tripod or even rifle.

Waste Belt Pockets

A backpack’s comfort and fit are paramount, especially when you’re carrying a heavy load over long distances. Mystery Ranch has a well-deserved reputation for prioritizing comfort, and the Sphinx 60 lives up to this reputation. The adjustable yoke system allows for precise customization, ensuring that the weight is distributed evenly across your shoulders and hips. This is particularly important for reducing fatigue and preventing discomfort during extended hikes. The padded shoulder straps and hip belt further enhance the comfort level, minimizing pressure points and chafing. The plush padding on the back panel provides ample ventilation and cushioning. Mystery Ranch uses their patented Futura Yoke system to keep the pack away from your back, allowing air to circulate and preventing excessive sweating.

Compression Straps

One of the standout comfort features of the Sphinx 60L is the adjustable torso length. This feature allows users to fine-tune the pack’s fit to match their body, ensuring that it sits comfortably on the hips and shoulders. This adjustability is especially appreciated for those who have a non-standard torso length. The load lifters and sternum strap are also adjustable, adding to the pack’s overall comfort and load stability. Whether you’re on a steep ascent or navigating tricky terrain, these adjustments can make a significant difference in how the pack feels on your body.

In the Austrian Alps While on Assignment

A backpack can have all the bells and whistles, but its true worth is revealed when put to the test on the trail. The Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L performs admirably in a variety of outdoor conditions. The durability of the pack’s materials and construction is evident as it withstands the bumps, scrapes, and brushes against rocks and trees that come with hiking in rugged terrain. The CORDURA® fabric shows minimal signs of wear even after extended use, a testament to its robustness. The Sphinx 60’s suspension system and adjustable yoke perform exceptionally well when it comes to weight distribution. Even when carrying a heavy load, the pack remains stable and comfortable on your back, allowing you to maintain balance and control during challenging sections of the trail.

Removable Top Lid

One of the key strengths of the Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60L is its versatility. It’s suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities, from multi-day backpacking trips to extended hikes and even backcountry skiing if your into that kind of thing. The numerous attachment points and gear loops make it easy to carry extra equipment, such as ice axes, trekking poles, or snowshoes. This adaptability allows the pack to evolve with your outdoor interests and activities.

Dislikes

The Mystery Ranch Sphinx 60 backpack lives up to the brand’s reputation for producing durable, comfortable, and versatile outdoor gear. Its innovative three-zip design, adjustability, and thoughtful features make it a compelling choice for backpackers, hikers, and adventurers seeking a dependable pack for multi-day trips. While the price tag may be a barrier for some this pack has also been out of production for a few years now and can only be found second hand.  If you want a pack that will last you on the trail and you can depend on, the Sphinx is a great choice.
